Famous across the world as the national anthem of Wales, legend has it that the melody of Land of My Fathers (sung here by the great Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, and an ensemble of male voice Welsh choirs) was composed in January 1856 by Pontypridd harpist James James (1832–1902) as he strolled along the banks of the River Rhondda.

His poet father Evan was so inspired when he heard it that he wrote a poem in praise of their Welsh homeland, which was instantly adopted as the lyrics.
