Fauré - Requiem

Fauré claimed that his Requiem (1877, 1887–90), for soprano, baritone, four-part choir and orchestra, was composed merely ‘for the pleasure of it’. Yet this radiantly sensual score was also written as a conscious reaction against Berlioz’s gargantuan 1837 setting, throughout which Fauré felt ‘taste for large dramatic effects and indifference towards religious music may find equal satisfaction’.
