The origins of the ballet date back to 15th- century Italy, when a series of formal dance manoeuvres were evolved from the sport of fencing. For over two centuries ballet flourished as a popular form of entertainment at the courts of Italy and France, until it was gradually incorporated into the burgeoning form of opera. These danced interludes created such a sensation that by the 1840s ballet had become an independent genre attracting some of the finest composers of France, Russia and Italy, including Delibes, Hérold, Ponchielli, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Khachaturian.
